From 28th April 2012

Youth Charity relocates to Wolverhampton College to help tackle youth unemployment

20/04/2012 - Wolverhampton, West Midlands

For the first time in 6 years, the KIC trailer took to the streets of Wolverhampton and moved to Wolverhampton College - Paget Road site.

This is part of a joint project between KIC and Wolverhampton College to tackle youth unemployment in the local area. This exciting project offers free training, a nationally recognised radio production qualification and work experience to young people not in education, employment or training. Young people (19-24) should contact join@kicfm.com if they wish to get involved.

KIC, a youth project that uses radio to engage disaffected young people, is based in a bright yellow trailer that used to move all over Wolverhampton broadcasting from schools and youth organisations. With the help of Redrow Homes, KIC is mobile once again and will be able to continue valuable work with young people.

Paint Wolverhampton Yellow

From 23rd February 2012

Young people in Wolverhampton want to show that they have a bright future in their city. The 'Paint Wolverhampton Yellow' Campaign is a youth led initiative by Wolverhampton charity KIC (Kids In Communication) to show that young people are passionate about where they live. KIC is releasing a picture of a yellow landmark from Wolverhampton every day until the 31st March. There will be 'Paint Wolverhampton Yellow' events happening across the city showcasing the fantastic work young people and youth organisations do. We want young people to get involved in metaphorically painting Wolverhampton yellow.

The 'Paint Wolverhampton Yellow' Campaign coincides with the relaunch of KIC after Government cuts forced the organisation to close on the 31st March 2011. Last week KIC achieved charitable status and is working with partners across the city to continue supporting disadvantaged young people throughout Wolverhampton.

Volunteers from KIC want to encourage the whole of Wolverhampton to participate. Schools will be taking part in 'Wear Something Yellow' days, there are yellow wristbands available and we will be encouraging young people to see their bright futures ahead of them.

Marie Baker - Co-founder of KIC - Rest In Peace

From 7th December 2011

We're deeply saddened that Marie Baker co-founder of Kids In Communication, sadly passed away last week.

Dozens of you have been sending in your tributes which help us smile for her.

From co-founder and Director Rob Smith,

"Marie. You were an inspiration. You empathised you sympathised, you listened, you supported and you helped 100's of young people particularly those most in need.

Be proud. Be very proud. Life wasn't always easy for you but you never gave up on helping. We are all , all the richer for knowing you. Truly missed RIP Rob and every young person at KIC."

She was a cheerful woman, with a heart of gold who made a difference to hundreds of young people when the project started over 10 years ago.

10 years on, Kids In Communication is still going, with now over 5000 young people accessing the service, making a difference in their lives, personally and professionally. She welcomed those who were struggling with life, those who with little hope around them and gave them a home and something to believe in. You are gone, but never forgotten and we will continue the legacy you left behind in your name and for the benefit of young people of Wolverhampton.

If there was a reason to save KIC, this is it, in honour of Marie.

KIC Responds to Birmingham Riots

From 9th August 2011

Young people are angry that a small minority are damaging their communities and reputation. With high youth unemployment rates, community groups suffering cuts and reductions education funding young people are generally angry. Young people have been disproportionately affected by government cuts.

The majority of young people understand that violence is unacceptable and that they have to positively engage with society to create change. These rioting young people are disaffected by society.

Kids In Communication (a youth media group within the West Midlands the has suffered government cuts) supports young disadvantaged people to positively engage within society. However, because of government cuts, thousands of youth groups that engage young people have been forced to stop the valuable work they do.

"We understand the need for cuts but the severity of them is hitting the youngest and most vulnerable. This amounts to social vandalism. Youth projects dealing with social issues have been scrapped without any thought to the consequences."
- Robert Smith (Chief Executive)

KIC is using social networking to encourage community cohesion and support young people.

The Impact of Big Society Cuts

From 23rd February 2011

KIC volunteers speak about the impact of government cuts. In a question and answer section, Tej receives a standing ovation from over 1000 young people at the Choose Youth Rally in Solihull.

Big Society Is Failing Young People

From 23rd February 2011

Young people are losing out on thousands of opportunities because of government cuts in the voluntary sector. The big society is designed to encourage "...voluntary groups [to] provide personalised public services to some of the most disadvantaged people that state bodies typically fail to reach."

Kids In Communication is concerned that these huge reductions in the voluntary youth sector will make the objectives of "The Big Society" will completely unobtainable.

In a press release, Terry Ryall, the CEO of vinspired commented that there is no strategy in place to deal with youth funding in the future;

"Last week I met Nick Hurd, Minister for Civil Society. It is clear from that meeting, and other discussions with the Office for Civil Society, that they have not yet accepted the need for Government funding of youth volunteering infrastructure. In addition, the future of the match fund is undecided despite the success of this programme and the investment it has leveraged."
- Terry Ryall

Nick Hurd , the Minister for Civil Society states that he is interested in... http://www.nickhurd.com/about "helping young people realise their potential."

We have spoken with other voluntary projects in Wolverhampton (Base25, The Haven) and we question whether young people are really being thought about.

Young people already feel let down by the political system: Higher Tuition Fees, Abolishment of EMA and now cuts in the voluntary sector. Is this the end of the government supporting young people?
